Elimination of Socio-cultural practices
«« BACK TO IMPLEMENTED PROJECTS PAGE

Under this project dubbed “Girls for Change”, Choice Ghana received funding from Ibis Ghana to mobilise community leaders and parents to understand the value of educating the girl child and therefore give equal opportunity for both boys and girls to go to school. The project believed that empowering the girl child through education is the surest way for the girl child to realize her innate potential for a dignified life. The socio-cultural practices that the project focused on included exchange and force marriages, over burdening the girl child with household chores, the perception of the value of the girl child as a housewife, discriminately access to educational and training opportunities etc.

The project seeks to ensure that, the girl child is given equal opportunity to enrol, retain and complete school successfully so as to become a responsible citizen in the society. This therefore resulted in the development of action plans and MoUs with communities to ensure the elimination of these socio-cultural practices to pathway for girls’ education and future. Out of the 10 communities entered 6 communities were found actively involving the male child in household chores and also all 10 communities have allowed all girls equal access to education and training opportunities.

Also the project culminated in Kpandai community leaders publishing in the graphic community resolution against force marriages, teenage pregnancies especially teachers impregnating girls etc.

Choice Ghana seek to empower communities to be capable of accessing opportunities for a better life.
